Told You So…

“Nah Nah, Nah Nah Nah, You fell off the bike!”

Usually revenge comes in the form of a sweet victory, this time it was a trip to the medical clinic and ten stitches. Let me rewind…

Cassie and I awoke yesterday morning to the familiar scent of ocean water knocking at our front door.  Of course we let it in, its always welcome in our home.  I perched myself on the front deck and began to reconnect with the world, checking my emails, and answering the plethora of incoming messages on Facebook. Cassie brings me tea every morning, a habit of hers I’ve come to love, and she sits next to me with her coffee, also reconnecting with the outside world. Usually following our boost of caffeine we cultivate a plan, usually consisting of breakfast and a dip in the ocean, however this morning in particular we had plans (something we have yet to have on this island).  Before our departure in the United States we put a deposit on a small bungalow, in the heart of Koh Toa’s city, Sairee.  On the way to breakfast we continuously bickered about the bike situation, Cassie wanting her own, and myself just sick of hearing about it, I relinquished my efforts and we decided we would rent a second bike (which only cost $7.50 by the way).  We inhaled our combination of eggs, dumplings, fresh fruit, and made our way to the renting station.  At last, we were on our way to our new home.  Our imaginations ran wild, fantasising about the clean ocean air outside our balcony, and the refreshing gardens surrounding our domain.

Boy, where we wrong.   When we finally arrived to our “home”, we were greeted with a dismal sight.  Garbage lined the almost impossible to climb landscape that was our doorstep.  Stepping over jagged rocks, that I think were meant to be steps, we come to the front door.  Out of breath, and ultimately out of shape, we enter.  Nothing like i’d imagined, the room was musty, the lights were dim, the view was non existent, and the fan was broken…we got the hell out of there.

Both Cassie and I, disappointed and stressed out, we set forth to find a new and more comforting home.  After three hours of searching, and a stop at a cafe, we found it.  We were actually on our way to our favorite beach in Mae Head, taking a break and fearing we would have no choice but to live in our predetermined home, we found it.   A large entry way welcomed us along with a very pleasant and friendly woman.  We explained our predicament and she seemed to have the perfect answer.  She took us around a bend and up a few well built steps, where we lay our eyes on what we both knew would be our new home.  It was perfect!  No garbage, breathtaking view and sitting between two of our favorite beaches, we signed the lease.  As our moods were being uplifted and our worries at bay, we decided to celebrate with some lunch and a snorkel at Tanote Bay ( a gorgeous coral reef about a minute away from our new home).

It was after this point…my intuitions came to reality.  Cassie and I were making our way up from Tanote Bay, a somewhat rocky dirt road, when all of a sudden I hear behind me…

“MIKEEEEEEEE!!!!!!”

I have heard this type of scream before, from my sister, and immediately my brain sends signals to the rest of my body.  I whip the bike around and run the throttle.  Again I hear…

“MIKEEEEEE!!!”, this time with more infirmity.

Not to my surprise I see Cassie, struggling to get the bike off her, a cloud of dirt around her, and blood engulfing both her leg and arm.

I use my superman strength (just let me feel awesome, okay?) to assist the bike off of her and direct her to sit on the ground.  A lovely and very sympathetic german couple also come to the rescue, handing me a very large water to wash the blood off, so I can get a better idea of where the blood is coming from.   A large sigh of relief comes over all four of us when we discover just few small lacerations on her elbow and another two, deeper (but not terrible) lacerations on her knee.  After a few more seconds of thought, its a community decision that its best to take Cassie to the hospital, because nothing is worth an infection.

We leave the bike on the side of the road with a busted mirror.  The german couple insists that they take our bags and lead us to the nearest clinic, being extremely grateful to have stumbled across such kind human being, i accept and we make our way towards recovery.  It was no more than a five minute drive with Cassie hanging on to me and taking the mans lead, that we arrive at the hospital.

“Closed”, reads a sign on the door.

“Shit”, reads the expression on my face.

I help Cassie off of the death trap that is a moped, and on to the step where she sits.  I walk over to the couple and convey my never ending appreciation for what they have done, and ask them for there names.

“I am Mario (an odd name for German I thought), and this is my wife Claudia.  It is no trouble at all”, says Mario.  “Us people must stick together in times of need”.

I thank them once more and wish them a farewell, just in time for the sign to be taken off the clinic door and a nurse to help Cassie inside and onto the bed.

After a few more tears and a crushed hand from Cassie’s clutch, a doctor comes out his office and assists the nurses in cleaning the wound.  He decides as a precaution, it’s best to stitch the laceration on her knee, to prevent infection.  Cassie was more comfortable with the possibility of infection and just wanted to scram.  However, I told her that it was necessary, and we weren’t going to take any chances.  The nurses localized the area with an anesthetic and proceeded to suture a few stitches. Before we knew it, Cassie was wiping the tears from her dirty face, and we found ourselves paying the hospital fee ( about $120).  On our way out, two local girls who were also there for unknown reasons, handed Cassie a drawing which also contained a get well letter not he back.  If there is one thing we learned through out the day, its that people here are kind, whole hearted, and always ready to lend a helping hand.  Cassie extended her gratitude and we made our way back on to the death trap, and headed home.  I rewarded Cassie’s courage with a large portion of sushi, and we fell asleep to a movie.

Cassie is awake now, and has just brought me my tea.  Her knee is sore but still in tact and on its way to a fine recovery.  She is bummed out that she can’t swim for a few days, but i keep reminding her we moved to an island, and the ocean will still be here upon her stitches being removed.

So, moral of the story, should have listened to me.  Would Cassie have stitches if she listened to me in the first place? You be the judge.

For now, ill just sit here with my tea and rejoice, I was right.

Forever and always right- Mike

Getting Lost and Finding Life

Today, Sunday May 31st, 2015, has been hands down one of the top best days of my life

It started off with a 3:30am wake up. Mike’s body must have had a FOMO (Fear of missing out) with the jet lag game I’ve been playing, because after we got back from our snorkeling trip and hike yesterday he passed the hell out. He passed out hard. He passed out harder than that one freshman in your pledge class that dropped out before second semester was even a quarter of the way over. Mike was out for the afternoon and slept all the way until 3:30am. When he woke up, I realized his wisdom teeth were also playing the FOMO game, they chose to come in right in time for our trip to Thailand. I suggested Mike take some more Advil PM, or as I hear was once popular for babies growing in their teeth, he take a shot of rum… but neither would suffice, and we both lay awake until the breakfast buffet opened at 7am.

After breakfast we both spent our own time dilly-dallying (is that even a word?), I read a few chapters of my book and he learned a new song on his Ukelele.

Eventually, we decided it was time to take action with our day and we rented a moped. I fought for the right to rent 2 bikes, because as different as Mike and I are, one thing that we both have in common is that we both like to take control of things. Somehow, he convinced me that we only needed 1 bike with a promise that I would get my fair share of driving.

The only task on our to-do list today was find tampons and some pain medicine but man did we accidently accomplish so much more.

We decided to first start driving towards the main pier and as soon as I spotted a pharmacy we pulled over. After I spent 30$ on a small box of tampons and 12 ibuprofen, I knew I’d have to remind our friend who is visiting us next month to bring me a decent supply. (Hey Chris!)

After that we just drove, wind in our face, past the palm trees, up the dirt hills, getting lost but winding up exactly where we wanted to be. When I saw a sign that said “love view point this way” I made Mike turn around and go up that hill. It ended up being this spot that I’ve seen pictures of and it was a beautiful restaurant on the top of the island with the most breathtaking views. We enjoyed a few beers and I told Mike my philosophy on butterflies.

You see, this island has an incredible amount of butterflies. When I was younger, I lost a few close friends. Someone told me that when I saw a butterfly, it was really an angel coming to say hello. When I moved to this island,I quickly learned that it was home to hundreds of different butterfly species. More of our modest friends have been nicknaming our blog as SSS, and in the past 2 years, my good friends Stefan, Sage and Sam have all lost their lives way too early. I’ve always promised to live mine to the fullest for not only them but for all of my angels. Now you tell me, is it coincidence, that I find myself representing SSS on this butterfly filled island, or is it fate?

Anyway,

After we drank a few beers at that gorgeous spot, we continued to ride around and look for some lunch. We drove a bit and found this one spot, but decided to go for a swim in the crystal blue waters instead. We swam with the fish for a little, and floated in the sun until we decided it was seriously time to grab a bite. We drove up and found another cool spot overlooking Shark Bay. We got a strawberry smoothie, 2 huge chang beers, some prawn spring rolls, pad see-eww and pad thai, and only spent in total about $14.

When we left, it was for sure my turn to ride the bike.

Mike did NOT agree, and we had a little argument, leading to me walking a few feet, than him letting me drive, than him getting off and walking, than both of us agreeing to let him drive and we got me a beer…except almost as dramatic as a bad spanish soap opera.  For all of you out there, again, Mike and I are VERY different people, with very different opinions, yet all too similar qualities, resulting in the most annoying bickering you could ever imagine. But, if there is one thing for certain we can always agree on..it is the love we share for each other.

So anyway, we grab a $1.50 beer at this bar, and I’m about to jump into the pool until we get yelled at and told we can’t swim unless we’re staying there or pay, so I put my sundress back on, chug my beer, and we head onto the next path not exactly sure where we’re going.

We found ourselves at the Moov bar and restaurant because I heard it had a piano. The place was empty except for the one worker, who was jamming on the electric guitar. He welcomed us in and let Mike jam out on the keys for a bit before joining him on the drums. It was awesome. He invited us back for a bbq, jam sesh and few beers later tonight.

Than we headed back here and took a dip in the pool. Now I find myself sitting here at the table on the deck of our bungalow, needing another Heineken, as I hear the Ukulele playing, the birds chirping, the waterfall from the pool flowing, and look up with the sea view directly in front of me. I wonder how I got so lucky to be living this life and I remember it’s not luck, it’s hard work and motivation. The only lucky part is finding the right guy to spend all these memorable moments with.

Evidence of Happiness

The Rolling Stones were right.

“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need.”

Home March 2015

Home March 2015

Three months ago, Koh Tao was only a figment on my imagination.  Reality was this snowy shore that I called home, wanting to submerge myself into the icy waters of the north atlantic.  Fearful of hypothermia and skeptical that the water would never become warm enough to swim, I decided enough was enough.  I can’t speak for all of man kind, but personally, my patience wears thin quickly.  Why is it fair that out of twelve months, I can only truly enjoy five of them?  Was I nervous to make an island my new home?

Home- May 2015

Home May 2015

Uhm….. No

Its not a fallacy that home is where you make it.  For some people, home might be the busy streets of New York, or the unforgiving mountains of Alaska, or an island.  I was tired of working the classic nine to five, going home, eating (usually more than I should have), going to sleep, and repeating that routine six days a week.  I was really only able to enjoy myself one day a week, on my day off.  However, even then, can you really enjoy yourself with one day off?  You work your ass off all week, bending over backwards for some asshole boss, but wait! Finally the weekend has arrived!  Great, now you have to play catch up with all of the shit you weren’t able to do because you had to go to work, after that you finally get some time to yourself.  so what do you do?  Maybe you crack open a cold one, mess around with some friends.  Son of a bitch! Its already Sunday night…time to go to bed.

Island time is a real thing.  Its a comforting feeling to be able to leave your phone at the house, not worry about being late, or waking up and deciding how to spend your day rather than looking at your phone and seeing what dreadful endeavors await you.

Yesterday, do you know what I did?  Let me outline it for you…

06:00- Woke up to watch the sunrise

07:30- Had some breakfast, even took some time to role-play that my dumplings were at war with my eggs (it was a futile effort by both parties, as both wound up in my stomach)

08:30- Did cannon balls until I realized I was no longer 16

09:00 to 14:00- Explored the island waters on a private long-tail boat and snorkeled away the majority of my evening

It was after this point I began to lose track of “Island Time”.

I ate some more food and retired to my chambers where I slept for a couple hours (Cassie says I slept for twelve hours, but who knows, as far as I’m concerned she wasn’t there).

Yes… the road to happiness is paved with blood, sweat and tears.  For Cassie and I, that road was months of hard work and meticulous planning.  Did it pay off?

View from our Bungalow

You bet your ass it did.

We are HERE!

It’s 11:10pm and I just can’t fall back asleep. Maybe I’m overwhelmed by everything that has happened today, or maybe it has something to do with that 5 hour nap I took this afternoon. (Damned jet lag & 35 hours of traveling!) so anyway I decided to reflect on today and try and update a post to our blog while everyone else is sleeping and the wifi is solely mine.

Our trip went surprisingly smooth. 35 hours of traveling is pretty rough regardless of your situation, but having Mike by my side to help throw in a few laughs during it all was a sigh of relief.
We left JFK around 1am on a Wednesday morning. During that flight we saw the sunrise over mountains, we saw the sunset into clouds, we saw the stars. Than again we saw the sunrise, it was unbelievable.
No, we did not join the mile high club unfortunately, (surprisingly my suggestion!) but we did take a lot of Advil PM and watch an abundant amount of movies. When we got to Taiwan we …
Aw! Mike just woke up and realized I wasn’t in bed and came to check on me, what a man…
Anyway, in Taiwan we got some breakfast.. Aka dumplings and some kind of beef soup with noodles.
I think that’s when it hit me we were actually in Asia, or maybe it was the hello kitty world playground they had in the airport.
Our flight from Taiwan to Bangkok was a breeze, than we had to transfer airports. It was probably an hour drive through the city but only cost us about 20$ to take a taxi there. We got to the airport too early to check in, so we slept in a corner of the airport and ate some pad Thai. It was probably the worst part of our trip. When we finally checked in, we went down to our gate and eventually I saw they were boarding our flight.
“Mike they’re boarding row 9, what row are we?”
I check to see we are row 17.
“I didn’t hear anything, were fine”
Trusting my boyfriend, who hasn’t let me down thus far. I fall asleep.
“Cassie our flights really late, let me go check it”
…. I look at him, startled, not realizing I fell asleep, knowing he messed up big time
“Get your shit babe, it’s final boarding, we gotta go now!”
When we got to Chumphon (pronounced Chum Pon) we were taken in a shuttle bus to our hotel A-Te Chumphon. Everyone we’ve crossed paths with has been so friendly! We were so excited to see beds for the first time in 24 hours even though we were given two twin beds. We showered, relaxed ;), and headed to sleep with a 4:45 am alarm set.

When my all too familiar Alt-J alarm went off, we both woke up excited to head to the island.
After a bit of waiting and shuttle bussing, we were finally on the ferry on our way to the island.

The views were stunning each and every way we looked as we traveled into the gulf of Thailand towards our island.
When we got here, we saw a sign with our resort on it and Mikes name. The man took us in the back of an open bed truck down some windy roads into the jungle to our resort. We were greeted with cold drinks and nothing but smiles. Everyone here is beyond friendly. We’ve already learned the respectfulness of taking our shoes off before entering certain areas, we’ve explored the beach, found the pool bar, and mike snorkeled while I napped. He even saw a shark!

When I woke up from what Mike suspected as my never ending slumber, we explored the rocks, headed to the beach and sat in a little bungalow. We enjoyed a Heineken, the sunset, and Mike serenaded everyone with Ukulele. A worker here, Stone, came over to chat a bit after hearing Mike play. Tomorrow he will be bringing his guitar and we all have plans to jam out in the same spot around 9pm. His English was broken, but it’s incredible to see how music can connect people. We ate an amazing dinner right on the water at the hotel resort, signed up for a snorkeling boat trip for the morning, than headed back to our bungalow. Where we showered, relaxed ;), and fell asleep. In which I woke up and now found myself here. A man saw me writing and brought a fan right next to me. Again, people are so friendly. I am in love with today. I’m in love with my boyfriend. And I am in love with all the events in my life that have lead to exactly where I am now. Relaxing on this wooden couch thing, a fan blowing, my water cold, and my heart happy.

Sweet dreams my friends, and with love always.
Cassie

First off, let’s clear the air…

Scuba, sex, and sunshine. Questionable title some may ask? Agree to disagree, perhaps, but hear me out. Scuba (We love it), sex (who doesn’t love it?), and sunshine (We need it).  We don’t want people following us in some high hopes of seeing a sex tape, because that won’t happen…trust me I’ve tried.  We are also not here to advocate publicizing your sex life, because you won’t find much of that here either.  Our blog title is simply a three step remedy, for our idea of a perfect lifestyle.  We could just as easily have made a blog titled “ChickenPotPie”, and called it a day. However, for all intents and purposes, we believe we will adhere to our original idea and move on with it.  We want you to enjoy our posts, pictures, and adventures, and as always, condone opinions and comments from everyone ! -Mike

May 27th, 2015

In T-85 days, Mike and I will begin a new adventure. It will start with a 22 and a half hour flight to Bangkok, followed by an over night bus trip and a 2 hour ferry until we will finally reach Koh Tao. Koh Tao is an island in the Gulf of Thailand. We decided to make this website to share our stories as we make new memories together. This is really just a tester post, but we hope you will enjoy what we have to share!
